无色透明液体，具有类似乙醚的气味。能溶解多种物质（如橡胶、树脂、脂肪、AICl3、S、I2、HgCI2）。不燃。性稳定。在无空气、湿气和催化剂存在时，加热到500℃，仍很稳定。抗水解。相对密度(d20) 1.6227。沸121℃。凝固点约-22.o℃。折射率(n~0)1. 50547。无闪点。与乙醇、乙醚、氯仿、苯混溶。溶于约10000倍体积的水。长期在光、水、氧气存在下分解为三氯乙醛及光气，对金属有腐蚀性。一般添加(10～500)×10 -6的胺类或苯酚的衍生物作为抗分解剂。

Long-term decomposition into trichloroacetaldehyde and phosgene in the presence of light, water and oxygen, which is corrosive to metals. Generally, (10~500)×10-6 amines or phenol derivatives are added as anti-decomposition agents.
